Going to Disney World is a no-brainer. Deciding where to stay? That requires a little more calculation. Let’s break down the pros and cons of staying at a Disney resort vs. venturing off property.
Staying at a Disney World Resort
Pros:
- It’s so, so easy. Every Disney resort has complimentary transportation to Disney parks, including Disney Springs, Typhoon Lagoon, and Blizzard Beach. There are buses, monorails, boats, and the beloved Skyliner, and all make getting around relatively quick and easy. We’ll take an air conditioned bus ride over a stroll through a steamy, football field-sized parking lot any day of the week!
- And did we mention it’s convenient? Staying on property means you’re closer to the parks–sometimes within walking distance. If you have little kids who nap or want to take sanity-saving midday pool breaks, this is a priceless perk.
- There are lots of perks. Guests staying at all Disney resorts benefit from early morning entry. You’d be amazed how much ground you can cover in that extra 30 minutes! If you’re more of a night owl, Disney Deluxe resort guests get extended evening hours on select nights.
- Plus dibs on Lighting Lane pre bookings. Since July 24th, Lighting Lane Passes are available for advance purchase. On-site guests can (and 100% should!) book 7 days in advance compared to 3 days for off-property guests. If ultra-popular rides like Slinky Dog Dash and Tiana’s Bayou Adventure are a priority for your family, this is a huge advantage.
- Make a splash on day 1! For bookings from January 1st to December 31st, 2025, resort guests get complementary waterpark tickets on arrival day.
- And a truly seamless experience. Nothing says Disney vacation using your MagicBand (or Disney app) for everything from opening your room door to paying for lunch or a new pair of Minnie ears.
- The Disney bubble is immersive and fun. From cute theming to exclusive character experiences, Disney touches are everywhere in Disney resorts.
Cons:
- It’s $$$. Disney resorts are more expensive than off-property options. This is especially true in the Deluxe category, and if your group is large and requires more space. However, you use our tool to check the best Disney World dates to see if you can save on your Disney hotel (Deluxe are often up to 35% off for off season dates).
- It can be hard to book. Popular Disney resorts like Pop Century (Skyliner + budget-friendly makes it a winner) and the All-Stars (the most affordable on-property offering) can book up quickly, especially during peak times.
Staying Off Property
Pros:
- The savings can add up. Off-property hotels and vacation rentals can be significantly cheaper than Disney resorts. This can allow you to allocate more of your budget to park tickets, dining, and other experiences.
- Especially if you are a large group. Many off-property options, such as vacation homes or suites, offer more space and amenities like full kitchens and laundry facilities.
- And do some DIY cooking and snack prepping. Disney dining options can be a less-than-stellar combination of expensive and not that great. Staying off property gives you access to a broader range of dining options, including local restaurants and chain eateries, as well as cooking your own meals and packing snacks.
Cons:
- You’re on your own, kid. You’ll need to arrange your own transportation to and from the parks, whether by car, hotel shuttle, or ride-sharing service. This can end up costing a lot of money (parking is $30/day at Disney parks) and a lot of time.
- Bye Mickey! Off-property hotels don’t have Disney theming.
- Reduced park access. Off-property guests only get early access to the parks 3 days in advance compared to 7 days for Disney resort guests(Updates Coming to Light…). This can make it harder to secure spots for popular attractions.
Conclusion
What works best for your family: In the Disney bubble or out in the real world?
